This is a one dimensional cellular automata. The update rule is that the color of each cell is the average of the color of it and it's neighbors on the preceding generation, plus a small random amount. Colors that become too large (too light) overflow and get reset back to zero. This is related to the coloring algorithm used for one of my quasicrystal pictures.
